Ostrich herl is actually mini ostrich feathers. It's a natural material with micro-barbules that trap air bubbles, reflecting light. Wrapped around the shank, it creates realistic and airy patterns for nymphs, dry flies, and emergers.

Ostrich herl is also used in tying tails and underwings for streamers, such as behind a marabou hackle on steelhead and trout flies. It can also be employed to tie soft and mobile wings for wet flies.
